The new campus significantly expanded space for clinical studies, including full-time specialists who will oversee patient care and research in conditions and diseases of the retina. Three operating rooms of the ambulatory surgery center have the most up-to-date ophthalmic surgical instrumentation, plus 14 presurgical and postoperative recovery stations are available for patients. Surgical procedures can also be simulcast to academic centers worldwide.
The LASIK and Vision Correction Center's surgical suite includes an observation area and 50-seat conference theater designed for patient and physician education. Do your research (so to speak) on whatever lab you want to join and be clear about your rights as an employee.The institute installed a digital fundus autofluorescence system to capture digital images of the retina and macula to detect the early signs of disease progression in patients with dry age-related macular degeneration. The good news is that there are a lot of smart and dedicated research associates here, and there are probably many labs where associates are happy. But this is probably not always the case. Personally, I had a supervisor who was not generally respectful of work-life balance and who changed long term goals constantly, knowingly had me do experiments that were destined to be pointless, and did not listen to my advice on how to fix experimental designs (it almost always turned out that I was right about whatever wasn't working) - resulting in me wasting a lot of time on the job and losing a lot of vacation hours. It feels designed to keep everyone exactly where they are. In addition, salaries offered by the University are generally lower than you could find elsewhere, and the system feels bureaucratic.
The location is not great, the downtown area is difficult to get to for anyone living outside the main city.
